1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to the 1999
4 York Community High School Boy's Cross Country Team and Coach
5 Joe Newton on winning the State championship title in Peoria
6 on November 6, 1999, with a modern-day State record of 24
7 points, the second lowest score in State history; and
8 WHEREAS, The team was led by Donald Sage, the individual
9 champion, who won with the sixth fastest time in State
10 history and the fastest time ever by a York runner; and
11 WHEREAS, All seven York runners finished with their
12 fastest times ever; the first five runners set a State record
13 with a time that was a whole minute faster than the previous
14 record; and six of the seven runners earned all-State honors,
15 a school record, by finishing in the top 25; and
16 WHEREAS, The Dukes have also been named national
17 champions by Harrier Magazine; and
18 WHEREAS, The Dukes have enjoyed an outstanding
19 championship season, winning the Palatine Invitational, the
20 Peoria Invitational, and clinching their 22nd West Suburban
21 Conference Championship; and
22 WHEREAS, Team members Donald Sage, Pete Cioni, Adam
23 Palumbo, Adam Roche, Peter Stasiulis, John Janulis, and Jay
24 McGrane have demonstrated extraordinary determination and
25 commitment in their quest to recapture the State title for
26 York; and
27 WHEREAS, These outstanding young athletes, who have
28 served as role models to their fellow students and who have
29 worked hard together as a "team" all season, encouraging and
30 helping one another reach their goal; and

1 WHEREAS, We recognize the efforts of team members and
2 legendary Coach Joe Newton to continue the winning tradition
3 at York in cross country and track and field; therefore, be
4 it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we do hereby offer our congratulations to Coach Joe Newton
8 and the Duke Team on their 20th State Championship Title; and
9 be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Coach Joe Newton and the Duke Team.
