 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, Joe Newton, one of  the  most  successful  cross
 3    country  and  track coaches in history has completed his 44th
 4    year at York High School; and

 5        WHEREAS, On November 6, 1999, he  led  the  Dukes  to  an
 6    unprecedented 20th State Championship Title; and

 7        WHEREAS,  Joe  Newton,  who  became the first high school
 8    coach to be selected as a U.S. Olympic Coach  and  member  of
 9    the U.S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame, has inspired
10    thousands  of  young  athletes  to  excel both on and off the
11    field; and

12        WHEREAS, Joe Newton has coached the cross  country  Dukes
13    to  19  national  championships, and his teams have lost only
14    three home cross country meets in 35 years; and

15        WHEREAS, More than 100 of Joe Newton's  student  athletes
16    have  earned college scholarships worth more than $1 million;
17    and

18        WHEREAS, Joe Newton is  a  member  of  the  U.S.  Olympic
19    Development  Track  and  Field  Committee  and  his  coaching
20    experience includes many international events; and

21        WHEREAS,  Joe  Newton  was  Assistant  Coach  of the 1972
22    American Junior Track Team vs. the  U.S.S.R.  in  Sacramento,
23    California; he was Assistant Manager of the 1979 Pan American
24    Games  Track  Team  in  San  Juan,  Puerto  Rico; he was Head
25    Manager of the 1982 American Junior Track Team vs. Bahamas in
26    Colorado Springs, Colorado; he was Assistant Manager  of  the
27    1983  U.S.  Men's  Senior  Team vs. Italy and England; he was
28    Head Coach of the 1985 American Junior Track Team vs. Canada,
29    Mexico, and Japan in Vancouver, British Columbia;  he  became
30    the  first high school coach to serve as an assistant manager
31    for the U.S. men's track and field teams at the 1988 Olympics

 1    in Seoul, South Korea; and he was the  Head  Manager  of  the
 2    U.S.   National   Junior   Team  at  the  1990  World  Junior
 3    Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria; and

 4        WHEREAS, Joe Newton  is  a  Hall  of  Fame  inductee  for
 5    numerous organizations, including the United States Track and
 6    Field  Federation,  the  Northern  Illinois  Track  and Cross
 7    Country Association Hall of Fame, the Keebler Hall  of  Fame,
 8    the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame, the NBC Mutual Hall of Fame,
 9    the  Elmhurst  Chamber  of  Commerce  Hall of Fame, the Kappa
10    Sigma Hall of Fame, the Gatorade Coaches Hall  of  Fame,  the
11    National  High  School  Athletic  Coaches Association Hall of
12    Fame, the United States Track  Coaches  Association  Hall  of
13    Fame, and the Northwestern University Hall of Fame; and

14        WHEREAS,  Joe  Newton  has  earned  coach-of-the-year and
15    distinguished service awards from several  national  athletic
16    associations; and

17        WHEREAS,  Joe Newton has left a lasting impression on the
18    sport not only  as  a  coach  but  as  a  gifted  author  and
19    motivational speaker; and

20        WHEREAS,  Joe  Newton's  dynamic,  energetic, and zealous
21    devotion to his students has taught us the true definition of
22    champion; therefore, be it

23        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
24    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
25    we do hereby honor the achievements of Coach Joe Newton as  a
26    dedicated  coach,  teacher,  and  friend,  and  that we offer
27    sincere congratulations on his 20th State Championship Title;
28    and be it further

29        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
30    presented to Coach Joe Newton.
