 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University  Medical  Center  of  Loyola
 3    University Chicago opened the doors to its  Foster  G.  McGaw
 4    Hospital  on  May  21,  1969;  its  purpose  was  to  provide
 5    education  and  training  to  health professions students and
 6    residents  and  quality  health  care  to   established   and
 7    still-developing  communities  in  western  Cook  and  DuPage
 8    Counties of Illinois; and

 9        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University Medical Center has developed
10    into Loyola University Health System  and  become  a  leading
11    Midwestern   academic  health  care  system,  recognized  for
12    teaching, research, and health care,  as  well  as  a  Jesuit
13    tradition  of  caring  for the whole person - body, mind, and
14    spirit; and

15        WHEREAS,  More  than  500  students  attend  the   Loyola
16    University  Chicago  Stritch  School  of  Medicine,  which is
17    considered a national model in medical education, and many of
18    these students  remain  in  the  State  after  graduating  as
19    physicians to serve Illinois residents; and

20        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University  Health  System  has  earned
21    national  recognition  in  such  areas as cancer research and
22    treatment;  care   for   high-risk   mothers   and   infants;
23    pediatrics;      organ      transplantation,     particularly
24    transplantation  of  hearts  and  lungs;  cardiac  care   and
25    cardiovascular surgery; neurosciences and skull-base surgery;
26    and trauma and burn care and research; and

27        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University Health System is the site of
28    the country's first Ronald McDonald Children's  Hospital  and
29    operates an innovative mobile clinic that brings medical care
30    and health education to medically underserved children; and

31        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University  Health  System  maintains a

 1    nationally accredited Level I  trauma  center,  which  offers
 2    24-hour-a-day care to the most critically injured patients in
 3    Illinois,  and a Burn and Shock Trauma Institute dedicated to
 4    research, medical training, and a reduction in the  incidence
 5    of injuries in Illinois communities; and

 6        WHEREAS, Loyola University Health System has achieved the
 7    best  survival rate for premature infants in Illinois and one
 8    of the highest such survival rates in the nation, has one  of
 9    the  oldest  and most active heart transplant programs in the
10    nation, and performs more lung  and  bone  marrow  transplant
11    surgeries than any other Illinois institution; and

12        WHEREAS,  Loyola  University  Health System is one of the
13    Chicago   region's   largest   employers,    providing    job
14    opportunities   to   approximately  5,000  non-faculty  staff
15    members at the main medical center on South First  Avenue  in
16    Cook  County  and  at 17 ambulatory, primary, and urgent care
17    centers in the western suburbs; therefore, be it

18        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
19    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20    we  hereby  officially  recognize  Loyola  University  Health
21    System as one of Illinois' most valuable health resources and
22    commemorate May 21, 1999  as  the  30th  anniversary  of  the
23    opening  of  Loyola  University  Medical  Center;  and  be it
24    further

25        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
26    presented to Loyola University Health System as an expression
27    of our esteem.
