1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor citizens within the
4 State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Garfield
6 Elementary School in Danville, Illinois are to be commended
7 for their quick thinking and responsible evacuation of their
8 school during a fire on January 11, 1999; and
9 WHEREAS, As firefighters raced to the school, many
10 worried that there could be someone trapped or injured; they
11 were relieved to find all the students safe and away from
12 danger; through the practice of routine fire drills, everyone
13 involved in the incident was led safely out of the school;
14 and
15 WHEREAS, On February 10, Fire Chief Thomas Lane presented
16 Principal Bill Cooper with a plaque honoring the staff,
17 students, and faculty for their safe and orderly evacuation
18 of the school; Principal Cooper assured those in attendance
19 that the plaque would be placed as a reminder of the fire and
20 the safe evacuation of all involved; and
21 WHEREAS, The staff, students, and faculty are heroes for
22 their quick thinking and the way they have since conformed to
23 their new, temporary relocation; therefore, be it
24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
26 we congratulate the staff, students, and faculty of Garfield
27 Elementary School on a job well done; through the practice of
28 fire drills in the school, a crisis was averted and lives
29 were saved; we also thank the Danville Fire Department for
30 their quick response on what might have been a tragic day,
31 but instead became a day of miracles; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to Superintendent David Fields and Principal Bill
3 Cooper.
