 1                       HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, For more than two centuries, the  American  flag
 3    has  been a banner of hope for generation after generation of
 4    Americans; and

 5        WHEREAS, The flag is the symbol of  a  country  that  has
 6    grown  from  13  colonies  to a united nation of 50 sovereign
 7    states; and

 8        WHEREAS,  The  first  flag  of  the  United  States   was
 9    authorized  by Congressional Resolution on June 14, 1877, and
10    in 1949, the United  States  Congress  officially  designated
11    June  14th  of each year as National Flag Day, to be observed
12    by the display of the flag and appropriate ceremonies; and

13        WHEREAS, The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag  was  first
14    used in 1892, was made official by the United States Congress
15    in  1945,  and through the years has been recited to reaffirm
16    our love and loyalty to our  flag  and  country  and  to  the
17    ideals that have made America a great nation; and

18        WHEREAS,  The  General  Assembly of the State of Illinois
19    recognizes and appreciates the symbolism represented when our
20    flag is proudly displayed and celebrated; therefore, be it

21        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
22    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL  ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
23    SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we hereby declare that the  30
24    days  from  June  14 to July 14, inclusive, shall be observed
25    annually as American Flag Month in the State of Illinois; and
26    be it further

27        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
28    presented to the Governor of the State of Illinois.
