 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The City of Mattoon was  hit  by  a  tornado  on
 3    Saturday  morning, March 28, 1998, at 5:25 a.m.; eight houses
 4    were destroyed, twenty houses received major damage,  and  in
 5    all  ninety-two  houses  were  damaged  by  the  tornado;  in
 6    addition,  six  businesses  were  destroyed or received major
 7    damage and ten apartments had minor or major damage; and
 8        WHEREAS,  The  City  was  blessed  that  there  were   no
 9    fatalities; only three people were injured; and
10        WHEREAS,   Within  minutes  of  the  tornado  touch-down,
11    neighbors came out of their homes  to  help  those  in  need;
12    off-duty police and firemen were called in, State Police were
13    called;  the  Mattoon  Emergency Services and Disaster Agency
14    and  Illinois  Department  of  Transportation  cleanup  crews
15    worked to clean up the rubble; and
16        WHEREAS, Illinois Consolidated Telephone  Company  worked
17    to  restore  service  and  the  Illinois Emergency Management
18    Agency sent representatives;  additional  help  and  services
19    were  provided  by the Mattoon Red Cross, the Salvation Army,
20    Catholic Charities, and many other  agencies,  churches,  and
21    businesses in the area; and
22        WHEREAS,  Governor  Jim Edgar declared Mattoon a disaster
23    area, giving the  City  access  to  State  services  for  the
24    cleanup, and State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka made available
25    money for short-term, low-interest loans; therefore, be it
26        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
27    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
28    wish  to  express  our  sympathy to those who were injured or
29    suffered loss due to the tornado; we express  our  admiration
30    for  all  the people who responded to the disaster and helped
31    the City of Mattoon  in  its  time  of  need;  we  thank  the

 1    individuals and agencies who are helping to bring the City of
 2    Mattoon  back to normal; and congratulate the citizens of the
 3    City of Mattoon on their  efforts  to  assist  neighbors  and
 4    friends to recover from this disaster; and be it further
 5        RESOLVED,  That  suitable  copies  of  this resolution be
 6    forwarded to Wanda Ferguson, the Mayor of Mattoon, and to the
 7    City Council.
