 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Senate  of  the  State  of
 3    Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Joseph Daniel
 4    Murphy of Chicago on February 6, 2003 at 74 years of age; and

 5        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Murphy  was born in Hannibal, Missouri and
 6    moved with his family to Chicago at age 6; he  had  lived  in
 7    the Logan Square neighborhood for the last 25 years; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Mr. Murphy received a bachelor's and a master's
 9    degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago; and

10        WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy was a retired public  school  teacher
11    and principal who devoted his time to local causes, politics,
12    and even volunteered as a handyman years after his retirement
13    in  1986;  he  served  in  the  United States Army during the
14    Korean War; and

15        WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy is past president of the Logan Square
16    Neighborhood Association; he was the founding member  of  the
17    Chicago  Alliance  for  Neighborhood Safety and served as its
18    president from 1991 to 1994; he also served on the  board  of
19    the Boys and Girls Club of Logan Square, as well as the local
20    school council; and

21        WHEREAS,   Mr.  Murphy  was  a  strong  believer  in  his
22    community, and if anyone need help he  was  there;  he  lived
23    with  a simple philosophy: "treat others with dignity, expect
24    the best from them and that's what you will get  in  return";
25    and

26        WHEREAS,  Mr. Murphy's passing will be deeply felt by all
27    who knew  and  loved  him,  especially  his  daughter,  Donna
28    Wittert;  his  son,  Leslie;  his two sisters, Mary Bitto and
29    Joan Haacker; his two brothers, Reverend John and Robert; and
30    his four grandchildren; therefore, be it

 1        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL
 2    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
 3    Joseph  Daniel  Murphy along with all who knew and loved him,
 4    and we extend our sincerest condolences  to  his  family  and
 5    friends; and be it further

 6        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 7    presented to the family of  Joseph  Daniel  Murphy  with  our
 8    deepest sympathy.
