HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Results of recent lead testing in Decatur schools
3identified service and plumbing lines in 12 school buildings
4that post a threat to students; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Exposure to lead can be detrimental to the
6development of school age children, as studies have found that
7even low levels of lead can lead to behavioral and learning
8disabilities; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lead exposure is also associated with a variety of
10other harmful effects for both children and adults, including
11neurological, cardiovascular, kidney, developmental, and
12reproductive outcomes; and
 
13    WHEREAS, While the majority of children's lead exposure
14comes from sources such as soil contamination, dust, or paint
15chips, lead in drinking water can be a contributing factor to
16overall lead exposure; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Despite overall declines in blood lead levels in
18recent decades, students in communities with older school
19buildings continue to experience high levels of lead exposure;

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3call on Governor Rauner and the Trump Administration to
4prioritize eliminating sources of lead exposure in schools; and
5be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
7delivered to President Donald Trump, U.S. Senate Majority
8Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck
9Schumer, U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, U.S. House of
10Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, all members of
11the Illinois Congressional Delegation, and Governor Bruce
12Rauner.
