| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Nearly 700,000 people in the United States are | 3 | | living
with a primary brain tumor, and more than 69,000 others
| 4 | | will be diagnosed this year; brain tumors are often deadly,
| 5 | | impact the quality of life, and change everything for patients | 6 | | and
their loved ones; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Anyone can get a brain tumor, including persons of | 8 | | any age, race, gender,
or ethnic origin; there are currently no | 9 | | standard prevention or early
detection measures, very few | 10 | | effective treatments, and no cure; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Malignant brain tumors are among the deadliest | 12 | | cancers
with just a 34% 5-year relative survival rate; brain | 13 | | tumors are
now the leading cause of cancer death in children | 14 | | under the age of 14; even someone with a benign brain tumor | 15 | | faces a potentially life-threatening
disease and may suffer | 16 | | from chronic neurological problems; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2015, an estimated 2930 people were | 18 | | diagnosed with primary brain or other central nervous system | 19 | | tumors; it is estimated that 950 of those were malignant; | 20 | | approximately 533 people from Illinois die annually due to | 21 | | brain or other central nervous system tumors; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, There have been very few new brain tumor therapies | 2 | | approved in the last 30 years; critical research at the | 3 | | National Institutes of Health (NIH) is laying the groundwork | 4 | | for breakthroughs; the NIH is the primary source of funding for | 5 | | brain tumor research in the United States; private philanthropy | 6 | | cannot fill in for the key leadership role that the NIH plays | 7 | | in funding, coordinating, and advancing research, and no amount | 8 | | of private funding can replace the FDA's regulatory role in | 9 | | evaluating and approving new treatments; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, The United States Congress needs to support public | 11 | | policies that strengthen brain tumor research, advance brain | 12 | | tumor research to new therapies, and ensure patient access to | 13 | | essential brain tumor treatments; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest | 15 | | nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community | 16 | | in the United States; as the leader in the fight against brain | 17 | | tumors, their initiatives and programs aim to improve | 18 | | understanding of brain tumors and to transform those findings | 19 | | into
new and more effective treatments as quickly as possible; | 20 | | to achieve
these goals, they foster collaboration with leaders | 21 | | across academia,
government, and the private sector; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, May of 2016 is Brain Tumor Awareness Month - a | 23 | | time to spread awareness about brain tumor facts, share |

| 1 | | knowledge, and call for new research and better treatments; | 2 | | therefore, be it
| 3 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 4 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 6, 2016 | 5 | | as Brain Tumor Awareness Day in the State of Illinois and we | 6 | | encourage people to support the research being conducted to | 7 | | combat this deadly disease; and be it further
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 9 | | presented to the National Brain Tumor Society as an expression | 10 | | of our esteem and respect.
