2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Richard L. "Dick" Nelson of Princeton, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on July 18, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson was born on March 30, 1935 in | ||||||
6 | Princeton to Frances and Malcolm Nelson; he graduated from | ||||||
7 | Princeton High School in 1953, and served in the United States | ||||||
8 | Army as a radar operator in Virginia and Alaska from 1955 to | ||||||
9 | 1957; he married Judith Ward on September 1, 1957; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson was the founder of Nelson Enterprises, | ||||||
11 | which includes the Advanced Asphalt Company, TCI Manufacturing | ||||||
12 | and Sales, Tri-Con Materials LLC, Pavement Maintenance | ||||||
13 | Services Inc., D&J Leasing, and AAA Aviation LLC; he also | ||||||
14 | founded Production Engineered Products, and became a | ||||||
15 | nationally known leader in the aggregate industry; he produced | ||||||
16 | the PEP Vari-Vibe Screen that changed the world and is still | ||||||
17 | used internationally today; he also acquired Kory Industries | ||||||
18 | with a group of other investors; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson was also a pioneer for environmental | ||||||
20 | causes and promoted the recycling of asphalt and other "green" | ||||||
21 | issues; during his entrepreneurial and tenured years, he | ||||||
22 | merited worldwide patent recognition and employed several |

1 | hundred people, and he always credited his success to the | ||||||
2 | "team" who managed his companies; he celebrated his 50th | ||||||
3 | business anniversary with an open house to recognize his team | ||||||
4 | at which the Nelson family established an annual scholarship | ||||||
5 | for a Princeton High School senior student planning to attend a | ||||||
6 | vocational school; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson served as past-President of the | ||||||
8 | Illinois Asphalt Paving Association and was recognized as a | ||||||
9 | leader in various professional circles throughout the United | ||||||
10 | States; he was past-President of the Princeton Park District, | ||||||
11 | with an additional 20 years of service as a board member; he | ||||||
12 | worked diligently for the development of Zearing Park and the | ||||||
13 | Bureau County Metro Center, made volunteer and material | ||||||
14 | contributions to the city of Princeton and Princeton High | ||||||
15 | School, and was a past-grand marshal of the Princeton Homestead | ||||||
16 | Festival Parade; he was the first fundraising chairman of the | ||||||
17 | Bureau County United Way and volunteered his time with Cub | ||||||
18 | Scouts and Princeton Little League; he also served on the board | ||||||
19 | of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson had a passion for flying and built his | ||||||
21 | own helicopter; he also enjoyed photography, was an avid | ||||||
22 | reader, and loved to travel; in 2011, he realized a lifelong | ||||||
23 | dream and authored his autobiography, "Paving the Road to | ||||||
24 | Success", about his journey through life and in management; and

1 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, | ||||||
2 | and by siblings, Marilyn Gonigam, Norma Nelick, and Ron Nelson; | ||||||
3 | and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Dick Nelson is survived by siblings, Wilbur | ||||||
5 | (Virginia) Nelson and Bob Nelson; several nieces and nephews; | ||||||
6 | his wife, Judith; their 3 children, Leanne (Dr. Jeff) Martin, | ||||||
7 | Laurie Wallace, and Steve (Gina) Nelson; and 4 grandchildren, | ||||||
8 | Nicole Martin, Kelsey Wallace, and Colin and Audrey Nelson; | ||||||
9 | therefore, be it

10 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
11 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
12 | Richard L. "Dick" Nelson, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
13 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
14 | further

15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
16 | presented to the family of Dick Nelson as an expression of our | ||||||
17 | deepest sympathy.
