SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Donald James Randa of Chicago, who passed
4away on October 13, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born in Oak Park; he graduated from Morton
6High School in 1939; he attended the University of Chicago, and
7later the University of Michigan, before joining the United
8States Army in 1942; he served stateside in the medical corps
9during World War II; and
 
10    WHEREAS, While stationed at Fort Custer in Battle Creek,
11Michigan, he met his future wife, Mary, who was a civilian
12undergoing training to become a physical therapist; after he
13left the military in 1946, they returned to the Chicago area
14and were married in 1947; and
 
15    WHEREAS, He began his career with Life Newspapers after his
16father insisted he come to work for him; he began by selling
17ads and dropping off bundles of newspapers; he later became
18vice president in charge of sales and general business
19operations; and
 
20    WHEREAS, He later became co-owner of the company and
21executive vice president; after his retirement in the late

11990s, Life Newspapers was sold to Liberty Group Publishing;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, Donald Randa is survived by his wife, Mary; his
4children, Lynne Dougherty and Larry Randa (Deborah); his
5grandchildren, Matthew Dougherty (Crystal), Katie Zuercher
6(Jared), Jennifer Reyes (Steven), and Jill Tester (Dr.
7Gregory); his great-grandchildren, Eirelyn and Noella
8Zuercher, Alyssa Dougherty, and Jacob Reyes; and many wonderful
9nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews;
10therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13his family and friends, the passing of Donald Randa; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Donald Randa as a symbol of our
17sincere sympathy.
