| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Retired Illinois State Representative Harold | 3 |
| Murphy will be honored by The Pastors Network on Monday, | 4 |
| January 15, 2007 during the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Celebration | 5 |
| at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy was born on April 1, 1938 in | 7 |
| Birmingham, Alabama and has become one of South Suburban | 8 |
| Chicago's most astute political strategists, but most | 9 |
| importantly- one of Illinois' most respected public servants; | 10 |
| he has become a trailblazer in the fight for civil rights, | 11 |
| social justice, and equality in education and jobs for all | 12 |
| people; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, He has a Bachelor of Arts in Education with Honors | 14 |
| from Northeastern Illinois University; he served in the Army | 15 |
| Reserves for eight years and was employed for over 20 years as | 16 |
| executive director of the Charles Chew Facility of the Illinois | 17 |
| Secretary of State's Office; he has been active with the local | 18 |
| school board and the Markham Park District for over 33 years as | 19 |
| well as the local Little League Baseball Team; he served the | 20 |
| city of Markham as alderman for six years and was elected to | 21 |
| the Board of Trustees for South Suburban College for six years | 22 |
| as well; in 1993 he was elected as the Illinois State | 23 |
| Representative for the 30th Legislative District, holding the | 24 |
| office for 10 years; and
| 25 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy has been awarded the Professional | 26 |
| Leadership Outstanding IPAC Freshman Legislator's Award, the | 27 |
| South Suburban Parks and Recreation Legislator of the Year, the | 28 |
| Distinguished Service Award-Markham Park District, Outstanding | 29 |
| Statesman of the Year, and the Illinois Education Association | 30 |
| Outstanding Legislator; and
| 31 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy served on numerous legislative |

| committees including Prison Management Reform, the Illinois | 2 |
| State Toll Highway Authority Advisory Board, the Illinois | 3 |
| Advisory Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependency, | 4 |
| Higher Education, Financial Institutions, County and | 5 |
| Townships, Commerce, Industry, and Labor, Health Care | 6 |
| Availability and Access, Environment and Energy, and | 7 |
| Elementary and Secondary Education; he co-chaired the | 8 |
| Transportation and Motor Vehicles Committee; he was | 9 |
| Vice-Chairman of the Pension Laws Commission and Chairman of | 10 |
| the Personnel and Pension committee; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy knew his job as state legislator | 12 |
| required the help of the community; he developed committees | 13 |
| within the district to more effectively resolve the issues | 14 |
| facing the district such as an educational task force, the Park | 15 |
| and Recreational Association, Clergy, Mayors, and Trustees, | 16 |
| Police and Firemen, Emergency Service, Healthcare Agencies, | 17 |
| Businessmen, Community Activists, and Seniors and Youth; and | 18 |
| WHEREAS, He often reached out to help meet the needs of his | 19 |
| community; he helped supply turkeys and food for the holiday | 20 |
| seasons, visited nursing homes and children's facilities, | 21 |
| participated in the South Suburban Toys for Tots and Angel Tree | 22 |
| programs, and helped further education by awarding Illinois | 23 |
| General Assembly Scholarships; and | 24 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy actively worked in his community | 25 |
| through voter registration drives, attending school, park, and | 26 |
| library board meetings, and attending municipality, township, | 27 |
| and town hall meetings; he participated in the 2000 U.S. | 28 |
| Census, the Democratic National Convention Planning Committee | 29 |
| in Chicago; and remains an active member of the Victory | 30 |
| Christian Assembly Church; and | 31 |
| WHEREAS, Harold Murphy was married for over 46 years to the | 32 |
| late Loretta Murphy; he is a father of three and also a |

| grandfather and great-grandfather; always realizing the | 2 |
| importance of family and community, he worked for the Cook | 3 |
| County State's Attorney's Office, Cook Juvenile Detention | 4 |
| Center, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, | 5 |
| Illinois Department of Human Services, Illinois Department of | 6 |
| Corrections, and the Illinois Department of Commerce and | 7 |
| Community Affairs; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 9 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 10 |
| we honor Harold Murphy for his lifetime of contributions to the | 11 |
| betterment of the State of Illinois and his community; and be | 12 |
| it further
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 |
| presented to Harold Murphy as an expression of our esteem.
