 1                    AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 883

 2        AMENDMENT NO.     .  Amend Senate Bill 883 as follows:

 3    on page  2,  by  replacing  lines  10  through  18  with  the
 4    following:
 5        "Investigators   employed  by  the  Death  Penalty  Trial
 6    Assistance and  Capital  Litigation  Division  of  the  State
 7    Appellate Defender shall be authorized to inquire through the
 8    Illinois  State  Police or local law enforcement with the Law
 9    Enforcement  Agencies  Data  System  (LEADS)  under   Section
10    2605-375  of  the  Civil  Administrative  Code of Illinois to
11    ascertain whether their potential witnesses have  a  criminal
12    background,  including:  (i)  warrants;  (ii)  arrests; (iii)
13    convictions;  and  (iv)  officer  safety  information.   This
14    authorization  applies  only to information held on the State
15    level and shall be used only to protect the  personal  safety
16    of  the  investigators.  Any  information  that  is  obtained
17    through   this   inquiry   may   not   be  disclosed  by  the
18    investigators.".
