1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of
3 the State of Illinois wish to congratulate Mrs. Slivy Edmonds
4 Cotton and Ms. Antoinette Wright on being the honorees of the
5 First Annual Annie Turnbo-Malone Awards Reception; and
6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Slivy Edmonds Cotton is the new owner of
7 the Chicago/Burr Oak Cemetery; she recently announced her
8 plans to build the new Emmett Till History Museum on the
9 grounds of the Burr Oak Cemetery; Emmett Till's brutal death
10 in 1955 is viewed as a major event in history that helped
11 ignite the Civil Rights movement of the late 1950s and early
12 1960s; the museum will pay tribute to many famous or
13 historical individuals such as Emmett Till, Annie
14 Turnbo-Malone, Dinah Washington, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon,
15 and many others who are buried on the grounds; her plans to
16 build the museum include a complete transformation of the
17 long-neglected cemetery grounds into one of the most
18 beautiful and respected cemeteries in the nation; and
19 WHEREAS, Ms. Antoinette D. Wright is currently the
20 President and CEO of the DuSable Museum of African-American
21 History; she is being honored for her vision and humanitarian
22 service in exhibiting the untold story of Annie
23 Turnbo-Malone; Annie Turnbo-Malone is the first
24 African-American woman multi-millionaire; she made her
25 fortune by manufacturing and selling PORO hair and beauty
26 culture products for African-American women; the Annie
27 Turnbo-Malone exhibit will be on display at the DuSable
28 Museum in Chicago through the end of December of 2003 and
29 will then travel throughout the nation; therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
31 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
32 we congratulate Mrs. Slivy Edmonds Cotton and Ms. Antoinette

2 Turnbo-Malone Awards Reception; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
4 presented to Mrs. Slivy Edmonds Cotton and Ms. Antoinette D.
5 Wright as an expression of our respect and esteem.
