SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Harry A. Nevlin, Jr., who passed away on
4August 5, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harry Nevlin, Jr. was born on June 22, 1919 in
6Alton; his parents were Harry Nevlin, Sr. and Kathryn (nee
7Starkey) Nevlin; he married Alice Jane Brown on April 18, 1959;
8she passed away in 1983; he married Linda K. Heil on January 1,
91993 at 12th Street Presbyterian Church; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Harry Nevlin, Jr. graduated from Alton High School
11in 1937 and worked with his father in the family business until
12he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1941; he
13served for 4 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant; and
 
14    WHEREAS, After his military service, Harry Nevlin, Jr.
15rejoined the family business, H.A. Nevlin Moving and Transfer,
16which his father had started in 1919; he later became head of
17the company until he retired and sold the business in 1986; he
18subsequently worked at various times for Fry-Wagner Industrial
19Movers and Roberts Motors and was a volunteer driver for Saint
20Anthony's Health Center; and
 
21    WHEREAS, As a member of the Board of Directors of the Upper

1Alton Business Association, Harry Nevlin, Jr. was involved with
2organizing the Alton Memorial Day Parade from 1944 until 1992;
3as a volunteer, he picked up flowers from florists for the
4parade every year and was the parade "starter" until 2013; in
52001, he served as the Parade Marshal; he also served on the
6Boards of Directors for many other organizations, including the
7Colonial Fife and Drum Corps, the Illinois Mover's Association,
8Illinois Movers Rates and Tariffs, and the Bank of Alton
9Building Board, and was a member of Commercial Travelers; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Harry Nevlin, Jr. was a member of the Masonic
11Orders since 1943; in 2013, he was given special recognition
12for being a 70-year member of the Masonic Lodge; he joined the
13Alton-Godfrey Kiwanis Club in 1951 and was a very active member
14for 63 years; he was also a member of Score, the Alton Little
15Theater, and the Route 66 Association; he also served as a
16volunteer at the Christmas Wonderland light display in Rock
17Spring Park and at First Night River Bend for many years; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Harry Nevlin, Jr. was a long-time member and Elder
19at 12th Street Presbyterian Church in Alton, serving as Head
20Usher for many years until the church's closure in 2011, when
21he joined the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey;
22and
 
23    WHEREAS, Harry Nevlin, Jr. is survived by his wife, Linda

1Nevlin; 4 children and their spouses, Harry Nevlin, III,
2Kathryn and Dennis Oseland, Susan and Christopher Whitlock, and
3Julia Nevlin; 2 stepchildren and their spouses, Laura and
4Patrick Shansey and Jeffrey and Jean Heil; 4 grandchildren and
5their spouses, Jordan and Melissa Clark, Nicholas Clark,
6Timothy Nevlin and fiancee Ashley Profer, and Charles and
7Olivia Whitlock; 5 step-grandchildren, Sydney and Evan Shansey
8and James, Jayson, and Julia Heil; and 3 great-grandchildren,
9Dalton and Jack Clark and Chloe Nevlin; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
12family and friends, mourn the passing of Harry A. Nevlin, Jr.;
13and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Harry Nevlin, Jr. as an expression
16of our sympathy.
