SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jack Kennedy Lahey of Chicago, who passed
4away on May 2, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jack Lahey grew up in Wrigleyville and attended
6Old St. Pat's High School; he played basketball for DePaul
7University from 1948 to 1951, and was drafted into the United
8States Army in the early 1950s; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jack Lahey joined the Harlem Globetrotters
10organization as a member of one of their traveling teams of
11in-house rivals and faced off with such greats as Goose Tatum,
12Marques Haynes, and Ermer Robinson; though his teams always
13were beaten by the Globetrotters, it enabled him to see the
14world and meet celebrities; he met Marilyn Monroe and Joe
15DiMaggio in Japan, comedian Danny Kaye in Hawaii, and
16bandleader Xavier Cugat in the Philippines; he also saw
17Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong; and
 
18    WHEREAS, After his basketball career ended, Jack Lahey
19returned to Chicago and worked as a physical education
20instructor for the Board of Education; he also worked as a
21vending machine distributor and a real estate investor; and

1    WHEREAS, Jack Lahey enjoyed a good meal, a glass of Cutty
2Sark, the view from his Acapulco condo, and watching an
3exciting basketball game on TV; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jack Lahey is survived by his wife, Angeline (nee
5Villafuerte); his sister, Mary Jemilo; a brother, William; and
6a step-daughter, Michelle Nieves; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Jack Kennedy Lahey, and extend our sincere condolences to his
10family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Jack Lahey as an expression of our
14deepest sympathy.
