HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Arnold
4Franklin Waldstein of Waverly, Iowa, who passed away on
5February 8, 2014; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein was born on January 17, 1925 on a
7farm in Brooke Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa; his parents
8were Anna and Arthur Waldstein; he married Marianne Elizabeth
9Aust on June 17, 1951 at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake,
10Iowa; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein graduated from Lincoln Lee High
12School; he later enrolled at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake,
13Iowa before transferring to Iowa State College in Ames, where
14he graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Farm
15Operation; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein served his country as a member of
17the United States Army Air Corps until his honorable discharge
18in 1945; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein began his professional career in
20Albany, Georgia, where he was employed as a farm manager; in
211953, he and his wife returned to Buena Vista County, where he

1farmed and worked for Stalcup Agricultural Services in Storm
2Lake, later becoming President and CEO; under his leadership,
3the business grew significantly from a firm of 2 to 7
4professional farm managers and rural appraisers; after
5retiring in 1999, he and his wife moved to Waverly, Iowa to be
6closer to family but continued to enjoy many international
7travel opportunities; he also served as an agricultural
8consultant for the United States government to improve farming
9conditions in Turkey and Czechoslovakia; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 1978, Arnold Waldstein was elected as a member
11of the Iowa State Senate, where he served with distinction
12until his retirement in 1986 to return to his business full
13time; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein was the recipient of many awards
15and recognitions, including the D. Howard Doan award and the
16National Farm Manager of the Year by the American Society of
17Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein was a strong proponent of
19community and civic responsibility which he practiced
20throughout his life; he served on multiple boards, commissions,
21and other venues at the local, state, and national level,
22including Kiwanis, the American Legion, Community Builders,
23St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and the Wartburg College

1Roundtable; he was also instrumental in helping to mobilize the
2various military service organizations to form the Waverly Area
3Veterans Post; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein was an author of many articles
5for local and statewide publications; he also wrote a personal
6memoir about growing up in Iowa, "Water Runs Down Hill"; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein was preceded in death by his
8parents, Arthur and Anna Waldstein; his 4 brothers; and his 3
9sisters; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Arnold Waldstein is survived by his loving wife
11and life partner of 62 years, Marianne; his children, Fredric
12(Edith), Arne Paul (Marie), Elizabeth Waldstein-Hart (Doug),
13and Mark; his grandchildren, Lauren, Eric, Emma, Dontina,
14Annaliese, Nickolas, and Lindsay; his great-grandchild, Mia;
15and his many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of
20Arnold Franklin Waldstein; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2our sympathy.
