HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former
4Chicago Police Superintendent LeRoy Martin, who passed away on
5August 31, 2013; and
 
6    WHEREAS, LeRoy Martin graduated from Richard T. Crane
7Technical Preparatory High School; he spent time as a bus
8driver before joining the police department; he received his
9Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 1972 from Roosevelt
10University and his Master's Degree in Public Administration in
111976; and
 
12    WHEREAS, LeRoy Martin joined the Chicago Police Department
13in 1955, starting out as a patrolman in the Burnside district
14on the South Side; he remained with the Department for 36
15years, achieving the rank of Sergeant in 1965 and Lieutenant in
161975; he was appointed Police Superintendent by the late Mayor
17Harold Washington, becoming the second African-American to
18serve in that position; he led the Department from 1987 until
191992; he also worked for the Cook County Medical Examiner's
20Office where he was Chief of Investigations; and
 
21    WHEREAS, LeRoy Martin enjoyed renovating the apartment
22buildings he owned in his spare time and going out to eat with

1his Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity brothers; and
 
2    WHEREAS, LeRoy Martin is survived by his wife, Constance;
3his daughter, Dawn; and his sons, LeRoy Martin, Jr. and Ron
4Martin; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we mourn the passing of LeRoy Martin, and extend our sincere
8condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
9him; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of LeRoy Martin as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
