HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, having served the
3community of Little Village, the City of Chicago, and the State
4of Illinois, was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for
5North America on April 15, 2013; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Goldman Environmental Prize, established in
71989, is an honor given annually to grassroots activists around
8the world who demonstrate courage and commitment to protect the
9natural environment; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto is the first Illinois
11recipient of the Global Environmental Prize in the history of
12the award; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto worked for over a decade
14to retire the Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants and
15bring environmental justice to her community; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, a life-long resident of
17the southwest side of Chicago, began her community activism
18when her son Anthony had his first asthma attack; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto served as a community
20organizer for the Little Village Environmental Justice

1Organization, educating her fellow community members about the
2health and pollution concerns of Little Village; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Proving herself as a leader, Kimberly
4Wasserman-Nieto was appointed executive director of the Little
5Village Environmental Justice Organization in 2004; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, the Little Village
7Environmental Justice Organization, and the Chicago Clean
8Power Coalition were able to build support in their community
9and across Chicago for the city to take action on coal-fired
10power plants; and
 
11    WHEREAS, With additional leadership from Chicago Mayor
12Rahm Emanuel, the coal-fired plants were retired in September
132012; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto continues her work to
15strengthen and improve the health of her community; therefore,
16be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we recognize and congratulate Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto for
20winning the Goldman Environmental Prize, and for her dedicated
21service to the residents of Little Village, the City of

1Chicago, and the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto as an expression of our
4esteem and respect.
