HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons has selflessly served on the Schaumburg Township District Library Board of Trustees since 1969; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons served as library board president 11 times, held the title of treasurer and secretary during multiple terms, and served as North Suburban Library System Board President 3 times; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons was instrumental in helping keep a balanced budget and by responsibly using public funds, created safe, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing buildings; and

WHEREAS, His input led to the development of a diverse, all-inclusive collection of materials and offering of services to all segments of the community; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons helped oversee the renovation of the Central Library in 1972 and 1987, the opening of the Hoffman Estates Branch in 1976 and Hanover Park Branch in 1993, construction of a new Central Library in 1998, a new Hoffman Estates Branch in 2002, and a new Hanover Park Branch in 2006; and

WHEREAS, With each new building, Robert Lyons helped facilitate the inclusion of state-of-the-art technology, as well as accessible facilities and adaptive equipment for the benefit of all segments of the community; and

WHEREAS, His devotion to the Schaumburg Township District Library led him to be named North Suburban Library System Library Advocate in 1999, Illinois Library Association Trustee of the Year in 2002, and American Library Association Trustee of the Year in 2005; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons used his expertise as an educator to develop goals designed to encourage lifelong learning and improve literacy for all ages; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lyons invited and valued the opinions of community residents and staff alike; and

WHEREAS, His regular attendance at library functions exemplified his affection for the community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the many accomplishments of Robert Lyons and notable efforts toward making the Schaumburg Township District Library a valued community treasure; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Robert Lyons as an expression of our esteem and respect.
