SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

ILCON Art. III, Sec. 8 new

Proposes to amend the Suffrage and Elections Article of the Illinois Constitution. Provides that no voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure related to voting, shall be imposed or applied by the State or any political subdivision in a manner which results in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen of the State to vote on account of sex, sexual orientation, race, color, or status as a member of a language minority. Effective upon being declared adopted.

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of this resolution a proposition to add Section 8 to Article III of the Illinois Constitution as follows:

ARTICLE III

SUFFRAGE AND ELECTIONS

(ILCON Art. III, Sec. 8 new) SECTION 8. VOTING - RACE, GENDER, AND LANGUAGE

No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure related to voting, shall be imposed or applied by the State or any political subdivision of the State in a manner which results in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen of the State to vote on account of sex, sexual orientation, race, color, or status as a member of a language minority.

SCHEDULE

This Constitutional Amendment takes effect upon being declared adopted in accordance with Section 7 of the Illinois Constitutional Amendment Act.
