SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat, who passed
4away on on March 10, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was born in Chicago to Josephine and
6Bill Scherwat on September 15, 1927; he graduated from Senn
7High School and the University of Illinois, where he was a
8member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was captain of the
9swimming team; he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II
10aboard the LST 1026 in the Pacific; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat began work as a teacher in District
1264 in North Chicago and was drafted into the U.S. Army during
13the Korean War; he served in Japan, playing the trombone in the
14band, welcoming dignitaries off the plane, and playing in honky
15tonk bars at night; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat returned to his teaching career and
17was soon offered the job of business manager for District 64,
18where he spent his entire career; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat retired and spent his days at the
20Bonnie Brook Golf Course selling golf balls and fishing in Iron
21River, Wisconsin whenever he could; he moved to Florida in 2007

1after the passing of Rosemary and met the second love of his
2life, Annie Yates; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was an expert swimmer; he worked as a
4lifeguard on Lake Michigan at the Chicago beaches, and his love
5of water continued with a 60-year fishing tradition, the Skal
6Cup Memorial Day fishing tournament, which carries on through
7his grandsons; he treasured his friendships, especially a group
8of lifelong friends who called themselves the Lucky Club and
9played golf and had raucous holiday parties together; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat played competitive volleyball into
11his 60s with men half his age; he was honored by the AARP for 20
12years of volunteer tax preparation; he was also a prize-winning
13gardener; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was preceded in death by his wife,
15Rosemary (Musso); his parents; his brother, Bob Scherwat; and
16his sister, Carole Muret; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat is survived by his daughters, Tish
18(Ken) Pasiewicz and Mary Ellen Montavon (Dennis Hildebrand);
19his grandsons, Mike and Scott Ratkiewicz; his Florida soul
20mate, Annie Yates; and his nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat and extend our sincere condolences
3to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
4it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Don Scherwat as an expression of our
7deepest sympathy.
