SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Levon Demerdjian of Oak Park, who passed
4away on May 17, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Levon Demerdjian was born in Beirut, Lebanon,
6where his family settled after fleeing the Armenian genocide;
7as a teenager, he made his way to the United States through
8Canada, intent on furthering his education by enrolling in an
9engineering program at what is now the University of Illinois
10at Chicago; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Levon Demerdjian soon teamed up with his brother,
12Arsen, to run authentic Armenian restaurants; the first of the
13restaurants - all called Sayat Nova - was on Sheridan Road near
14Loyola University's Lake Shore Campus; the second still
15operates on Ohio Street off Michigan Avenue; the third in Des
16Plaines; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Levon Demerdjian first venture was the Auto Grill,
18which opened in 1964 and operated for two years; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Levon Demerdjian was preceded in death by his
20wife, Marjorie, and his brother, Arsen Demirdjian; and

1    WHEREAS, Levon Demerdjian is survived by his son, Raffi;
2his daughters, Tania, Nadia, and Tamara; a granddaughter; and
3his brother, Dr. Armen Demerdjian; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6Levon Demerdjian, and extend our sincere condolences to his
7family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
8further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Levon Demerdjian as an expression of
11our deepest sympathy.
