SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Officer Stevenson "Steve" Jones of Elgin,
4who passed away on May 7, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Officer Jones was born on June 13, 1957; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Officer Jones was a veteran of the Elgin Police
7Department and a school resource officer at Kimball Middle
8School; he worked for 28 years making Elgin a better place to
9live; he was well known throughout Elgin, where he spent his
10entire career after being hired in 1989; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Officer Jones worked patrol for many years and was
12a member of the department's drug unit and the
13multijurisdictional North Central Narcotics Task Force; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Officer Jones ran a mentoring program for kids,
15connecting them with people he knew in the community; he helped
16organize the "community conversations" series held between
17police and residents at Second Baptist Church of Elgin; he is
18one of the founding members of the Northern Illinois Chapter of
19National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives; he
20was most recently honored with the Life Time Membership from
21the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement

2    WHEREAS, Officer Jones earned 16 letters of appreciation, a
3department commendation in 1995, and distinguished service
4awards in 2010 and 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Officer Jones enjoyed sports and was a fan of the
6Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Bears; he recently
7organized a visit at Kimball Middle School by Jarrett Payton,
8son of the late Walter Payton, the former Chicago Bears Running
9back; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Officer Jones became very popular among the
11students and staff at Kimball Middle School in Elgin; many of
12the students described him as amazing, legendary, and some even
13said he was a father figure to them; he was very approachable
14and took many of the younger officers under his wing sharing
15many of his life experience; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Officer Stevenson "Steve" Jones, and extend our sincere
19condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
20him; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2our deepest sympathy.
