SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Zia Hassan Ph.D., who passed away on October 29, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hassan received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Punjab in Pakistan and migrated to United States in the 1956; he earned his master's degree in l958 and his doctorate in 1965 in industrial engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago (IIT); and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hassan began his career as a lecturer at IIT in the early 1960s and became Dean of the Stuart School of Business; he taught business policy and quality management; he published over 30 papers, co-authored Basic Programs for Production and Operations Management, and wrote the chapter "Design of Interrelated Manufacturing and Quality Systems" in the Manufacturing High Technology Handbook; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hassan was a Fellow of the American Society for Quality and served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award; he was one of the founding members and the first chairman of board of trustees for the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park; he was chairman of the Islamic Foundation for over 40 years and during his tenure it grew from a small weekend religious school to one of the largest Islamic Centers in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hassan was the Chairman Emeritus of the Islamic Foundation and Dean Emeritus of IIT's Stuart School of Business; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hassan is survived by his wife, Dr. Shakeela Hassan; three daughters; and five grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Zia Hassan Ph.D., and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Hassan as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
