SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charlie "Chuck" Smith Jr. of Chicago, who
4passed away on October 12, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was born in Hughes, Arkansas, to Jeff
6Smith and Eliza Thomas on January 20, 1927; he was their
7seventh child; he attended Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church
8in Hughes; he moved to Chicago and was a deacon at True Vine
9Missionary Church; he married Lottie Mae Thomas in 1972; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Chuck Smith served in the United States Army in
11the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952; he worked
12at Glidden Paint Company, from which he retired after 25 years;
13he then opened his own business, Chuck's Garage; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was a 33rd Degree Master Mason and a
15member of the Jordan Temple Grand Lodge in Chicago; he was a
16compassionate and fun-loving person who was the life of the
17party; he was protective of his family and known for his
18strength and smile; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was preceded in death by his parents;
20his sisters, Viola Singletary, Samela Cooks, Mae Lisa Stewart,
21and Della Thomas; his brothers, Elroy Shaw and J.T. Thomas; and

1his children, Valeria Mae Smith and Karrie Smith; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Chuck Smith is survived by his wife, Lottie; his
3daughters, Jovonda (Mark) Schafrik, Loretta Kidd Brady, and
4Charlene (Ron) Murakam; his 13 grandchildren; his 30
5great-grandchildren; his three special godsons, Enock Clark
6Bey, Larry Young, and Farley Keith (Delcey) Williams; and many
7nieces, nephews, and friends; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Charlie "Chuck" Smith Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to
11his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Chuck Smith as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
