HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Jack D.
4Davis of Springfield, who passed away on February 4, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jack Davis was born in Chicago to Russell and Edna
6Bender on September 6, 1935; his father died when he was a
7child after which the family moved to a farm in Jefferson
8County, where his mother married his adoptive father, Melcher
9"M.C." Davis; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jack Davis began college at the age of 15 at
11Southern Illinois University; he graduated at the age of 19 and
12shipped off to Naval Officer Candidate School; he served as a
13lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Following his naval service, Jack Davis worked as
15a counselor for the disabled; he met Virginia "Ginny" Griffin
16and they soon married; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Once Jack Davis and Ginny were married, they moved
18to Chicago and Jack began work in the steel industry, where he
19built a successful steel company, Lexington Steel, which he
20sold in 1975 to focus on life as a public servant; and

1    WHEREAS, Jack Davis served in the Illinois House of
2Representatives for 10 years before he was elected to the
3United States Congress in 1986; he served proudly on the House
4Armed Services Committee; following his service in Congress, he
5and Ginny moved to Sangamon County; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Soon thereafter, President George H.W. Bush
7called Jack Davis back to Washington, D.C. to serve as the
8Assistant Secretary of the United States Air Force; he served
9as assistant secretary during operations Desert Shield and
10Desert Storm; he flew a combat mission over Iraq during his
11time in the desert and was awarded the Meritorious Service
12Medal for his combat role; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Jack Davis returned to Sangamon County and had a
14successful radio program on WMAY for many years; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Jack Davis had a love for traveling and he and
16Ginny made numerous trips to their home on the Sea of Cortez in
17Mexico; he loved blue water and fishing; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jack Davis is survived by his wife of 58 years;
19his children, Jill (Robert) Egizii, Heather (Charles IV)
20Schenck, and Jack (Carolyn) Davis; and his nine beloved
21grandchildren; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3mourn the passing of Jack D. Davis, and extend our sincere
4condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
5him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Jack Davis as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
