HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Conrad Worrill on the occasion of his retirement as Director of the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies on the Northeastern Illinois University campus after 12 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Worrill has served as a professor at the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education, and as Department Chair and Academic Program Coordinator for the Inner City Studies program; and

WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, Dr. Worrill has advanced causes such as educational restructuring, human rights, reparations, and political and economic empowerment for the black community; his activism is defined by his leadership in organizations and his activities at the forefront of social and racial justice, African-centered education, African liberation, and self-determination for people of African descent; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Worrill has been an active participant in the Black Power, civil rights, and human rights movements; he was the special consultant for field operations for the historic Million Man March and was a street organizer for Harold Washington's mayoral campaign; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Worrill served as Chairman, and now Chairman Emeritus, of the National Black United Front; he is a board member of the Black United Fund of Illinois; he is a lifetime member of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, and a member of the Kemetic Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations, and the Association of African Historians; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Worrill earned a bachelor's degree from George Williams College, a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and a doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin; his major field of study was black political and movement history, social theory, and curriculum and instruction; after his retirement, he will continue to write, lecture, and consult on issues that challenge the African world; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Conrad Worrill on his retirement as Director of the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, and we wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Worrill as an expression of our esteem and respect.
