HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Fred August Kummerow of Urbana, who passed away on May 31, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow became a resident of Urbana in order to pursue the position of Assistant Professor of Food Chemistry at the University of Illinois after successfully completing his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and

WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow served as a Ph.D. thesis advisor for over 60 graduate students; he authored or coauthored over 400 peer-reviewed papers during his time at the university; and

WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow's determination, even in the face of skepticism and other challenges, to pursue knowledge of the relationship of lipids to nutrition and heart disease resulted in revolutionary findings; and

WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow's research changed the way people think about their diet across the globe and forced federal agencies to acknowledge the dangers of trans fats; and

WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow not only manifested scientific curiosity and the betterment of humanity through science throughout his life but also continually advocated for the difficulties faced by economically disadvantaged scholars; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Fred Kummerow; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Fred Kummerow as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
