HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Fourth District Appellate
4Court Justice M. Carol Pope of Petersburg on the occasion of
5her retirement on August 1, 2017; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Justice Pope received her undergraduate degree
7from the University of Illinois, where she graduated Phi Beta
8Kappa, magna cum laude, and was named to the Bronze Tablet, the
9university's highest recognition of academic excellence, in
101975; she obtained her Juris Doctor, with honor, from DePaul
11University School of Law in 1979, where she was an editor of
12the Law Review; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Justice Pope served as a law clerk to United
14States District Judge J. Waldo Ackerman in the Central District
15of Illinois from 1979 to 1983; from 1983 to 1984, she was an
16attorney with Mayer, Brown and Platt in Chicago; she was
17elected Menard County State's Attorney in 1984 and 1988; in
181991, she was appointed a resident circuit judge of Menard
19County by the Supreme Court of Illinois and was elected to that
20position in 1992 and retained in 1998, 2004, and 2010; she was
21assigned to the Appellate Court on December 1, 2008 and elected
22to a full term in 2012; and

1    WHEREAS, Justice Pope served as chair of the Supreme
2Court's Committee on Strategic Planning for three years; she is
3a past president of the Illinois Judges Association and served
4as a member of the Executive Committee and as chair of the
5Committee on Education of the Illinois Judicial Conference; she
6is a member of the Illinois Judges Association, the Illinois
7State Bar Association, and the Sangamon and Menard County Bar
8Associations; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Justice Pope and her husband, Al, have two sons
10and four grandsons; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13congratulate Fourth District Appellate Court Justice M. Carol
14Pope on her retirement, and we wish her the best in all her
15future endeavors; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Justice Pope as an expression of our esteem and
18respect.
