HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 150th anniversary of the
4incorporation of the Village of Orangeville; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On January 1, 1838, John Curtis purchased 80 acres
6from the United States government at the Dixon Land Office; he
7built a primitive dam on the Richland Creek and constructed a
8gristmill and sawmill on the west side of the creek; in 1846,
9John Bower arrived with his family and purchased the 80 acres
10and the mills; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In 1851, John Bower had the Stephenson County
12Surveyor plan a new village on the east side of Richland Creek;
13Orangeville continued to grow and was incorporated in 1867; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Although the origin of the name Orangeville is
15unknown, there are three possibilities - it was named in honor
16of Orangeville, Pennsylvania to draw settlers from that area;
17it was named after the Hedge or Mock Orange that grew in the
18area; or it was named after a prairie plant with an orange
19flower that also grew in the area; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Today, Orangeville is a community of
21approximately 800 people; it maintains its own school system,

1and numerous businesses populate the downtown area; therefore,
2be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5recognize the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the
6Village of Orangeville, and we wish it many more wonderful
7years; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Village President Michael Siedschlag.
