HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 60th anniversary of the
4LaGrange Area Department of Special Education (LADSE); and
 
5    WHEREAS, LADSE began as a pilot project in 1956, an
6initiative led by its first Executive Director, C. Lewis
7Martin; and
 
8    WHEREAS, LADSE was established by the State of Illinois in
91957; it was authorized to assist 14 public school districts in
10the delivery of special education services to students with
11disabilities - services that were not yet required by federal
12law; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 1957, LADSE provided special education
14classroom instruction to 122 students in 12 classrooms located
15in five member districts; as of 2017, LADSE provides
16specialized classroom instruction to 185 students in 20
17classrooms located in seven member districts and two community
18settings; in addition, LADSE provides vocational instruction
19to 208 district students in district classrooms and community
20settings; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In 1966, LADSE began operating the Secondary Deaf

1and Hard of Hearing program for students in the DuPage West
2Cook region, serving up to 80 students from 25 or more
3districts on an annual basis; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In 2017, LADSE provides more than 20 types of
5support services designed to help students, who have or are at
6risk of disabilities, achieve improved outcomes in district
7classrooms and in community settings; in the summer of 2017,
8LADSE will provide specialized instruction to 250 eligible
9preschool or elementary students and 20 high school students;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, The primary purpose of LADSE is now to provide
12access to the wide range of specialized services and
13information necessary to make district services more complete,
14more personalized, and more effective for students who have or
15are at-risk of disabilities; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18recognize the 60th anniversary of the LaGrange Area Department
19of Special Education, and we wish them many more successful
20years; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to LADSE as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
