HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Patten Gymnasium at Northwestern University in
3Evanston was the site of the very first men's Division I NCAA
4basketball championship in 1939; since then, 317 different
5men's basketball teams have participated in the annual NCAA
6tournament; and
 
7    WHEREAS, On March 1, 2017, the Wildcats beat the University
8of Michigan to reach 10 Big Ten wins for the first time since
9the 1932-33 campaign; and
 
10    WHEREAS, After 78 years, the Wildcats were finally selected
11to participate in the NCAA basketball tournament on March 12,
122017; the program earned their first NCAA tournament victory in
13the first round with a 68 to 66 win over Vanderbilt University;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Wildcats compiled a record of 24 wins and 12
16losses during the 2016-2017 season; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Wildcats are not only dedicated to athletic
18excellence, but they are also leaders in the classroom,
19consistently ranking among the top Division I men's basketball
20teams in graduation rates and grade point average; and

1    WHEREAS, Through their abilities, character, and
2leadership on and off the court, the Wildcats serve as positive
3role models for young men throughout the State of Illinois;
4therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7congratulate Northwestern University and its athletes,
8coaches, faculty, students, administration, and alumni on
9receiving their first invitation to compete in the 2017 NCAA
10Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, and we commend
11Northwestern University for its pursuit of athletic and
12academic excellence; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Northwestern University Head Coach Chris Collins
15as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
