HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Harrisburg CUSD #3's
4Summer Food Program and Food Service Coordinator Valarie Hodges
5on receiving an honorable mention from the Governor's Hometown
6Award Program for 2018; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Summer Food Program was started by Valarie
8Hodges, Food Service Coordinator for the School District, in
92012; the program allows for free meals to be given to any
10child under the age of 18; the addition of adult meals for the
11cost of $3 was recently added to accommodate the adults who
12bring the children; at the end of the 2017 school year, the
13Harrisburg District entered into the fifth year of providing
14balanced meals to the Harrisburg Community; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In 2017, over ten thousand meals were served in 44
16days; since June of 2018, 5,735 meals have been served; and
 
17    WHEREAS, During the school year, the nutritional needs of
18children are met; during summer break, those same children's
19needs do not change; the program has an on-site facility and
20also delivers meals to certain mobile sites each day, so that
21every child has the opportunity to receive a healthy meal each
22day of summer break; and

1    WHEREAS, Supported by donations, volunteers from the
2community and school system, the City of Harrisburg, and
3legislators, the program has grown to include giveaways,
4tutoring and reading groups, and fun days; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Governor's Hometown Awards program gives
6formal recognition to those who contributed to projects that
7improved their community's quality of life; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10congratulate Harrisburg CUSD #3's Summer Food Program and Food
11Service Coordinator Valarie Hodges on receiving an honorable
12mention from the Governor's Hometown Award Program for 2018 and
13on meeting their goal of feeding the community; we wish them
14many more successful years; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to Food Service Coordinator Valarie Hodges as an
17expression of our esteem and respect.
