HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Many areas of society suffer from systemic racism,
3and in Illinois, minorities who work in government and politics
4are painfully aware that racism still exists; and
 
5    WHEREAS, No minority should have to contend with anyone who
6intentionally erects roadblocks to their advancement based on
7their race; and
 
8    WHEREAS, No minority legislator, lobbyist, legislative
9staffer, or campaign worker should feel abused, threatened, or
10extorted based on their race; and
 
11    WHEREAS, To constantly encounter racism on a daily basis is
12a truly exhausting and an utterly defeatist way to live and no
13one should have to endure it, especially while attempting to do
14the work of the public; and
 
15    WHEREAS, When minorities choose to leave careers in public
16service due to racism all Illinoisans suffer the loss of their
17commitment to creating a better Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Every minority in every area of society,
19regardless of age, race, physical appearance, gender
20expression, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation has

1stories of having to deal with racism; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Many minorities do not feel safe enough to speak
3up because the truth can still cost them their career; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Despite the fact that members of the General
5Assembly have adopted policies against racism in the workplace
6and training is available, the culture of racism persists and
7extends beyond those subject to such policies; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The time has come for us to raise our collective
9voices and share our stories; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE
12CONCURRING HEREIN, that those supporting this resolution are
13committed to doing better and working to change the culture of
14racism that befouls state government; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That in this upcoming election cycle we commit to
16challenging every elected official, every candidate, every
17staffer, and every participant in our democratic process to do
18better; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to every member of the General Assembly, the Illinois
