HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) was born into slavery;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North and
5subsequently made approximately 13 missions to rescue
6approximately 70 enslaved people, family and friends, using the
7network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the
8Underground Railroad; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman later helped abolitionist John
10Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry; during the
11Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the United
12States Army; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In her later years, Harriet Tubman was an activist
14in the struggle for women's suffrage; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE
17CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of North
18Avenue in Chicago from its intersection with Central Avenue to
19its intersection with Cicero Avenue as the "Harriet Tubman
20Memorial Avenue"; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That the City of Chicago is requested to erect at
2suitable locations, consistent with State and federal
3regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the
4name "Harriet Tubman Memorial Avenue"; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6delivered to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago
7Department of Transportation.
