HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) was born into slavery; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North and subsequently made approximately 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry; during the Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, In her later years, Harriet Tubman was an activist in the struggle for women's suffrage; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of North Avenue in Chicago from its intersection with Central Avenue to its intersection with Cicero Avenue as the "Harriet Tubman Memorial Avenue"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the City of Chicago is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the name "Harriet Tubman Memorial Avenue"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Transportation.
