SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Ann Hughes-Johnson of Waukegan, who passed away on January 5, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was born on July 23, 1925 in Charleston, West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson graduated from Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida in 1943; she subsequently earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Stetson University in 1949, her Master of Education degree (cum laude) from the National College of Education at National Louis University in 1964, and 62 hours towards her Ph.D. in math at Northwestern University; she was elected to the honorary Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Fraternity while at Stetson and to the Pi Lambda Theta honorary education fraternity while at Northwestern; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson retired in 1985 from an education career that spanned over 25 years; she taught at Commonwealth School (now Novak-King) in North Chicago, Beach Park Elementary School, and Waukegan High School; she also was a chemist at Abbott Laboratories for a year before going into teaching; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was an involved member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, where she was an elder, deacon, singer in the Westminster Choir, and Sunday School teacher; she was also very involved in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waukegan, where she sang in the choir and served on the Church Council and Women's Circle; she was also a member of numerous civic organizations, including the Exchange Club, the American Association of University Women, the Waukegan Township Supervisor's office, the Philanthropic Educational Organization, the Women's Club, the Girl Scouts of America, the Waukegan Swedish Glee Club, the Waukegan Symphony Chorus, and many other bridge, golf, and community organizations; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Judge John L. Hughes, and her brother, Al Stine; and

WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, Ralph Vincent Johnson; 4 children, Michael (Connie) Hughes, David (Marilyn) Hughes, Steven (Mary) Hughes, and Patricia Hughes; 3 step-children, Lynette (John) Carlson, Doug (Kathleen) Johnson, and Cindy (Tim Kasper); 11 grandchildren; 3 1/2 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Liz Stine; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of Ann Hughes-Johnson; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ann Hughes-Johnson as an expression of our sympathy.
