SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Ruth E. Merriman of Wauconda, who passed away on December 15, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Merriman was born in Chicago on May 11, 1922 to William and Elizabeth (nee Sheparski) Schloen; she graduated from Lucy Flower Technical High School in Chicago; she married William Frederick Merriman on February 14, 1942; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Merriman worked for Avon Products in Morton Grove and United Airlines in Elk Grove; she was the first female to be voted President of a school board in the State of Illinois; she spent many hours as a volunteer with the Salvation Army and other volunteer programs; her most extensive volunteerism was at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Merriman enjoyed traveling throughout the world; she was actively involved in the Girl Scouts and parent-teachers association; as a young girl, she was a member of Job's Daughters Masonic organization at Myrtle Masonic Temple in Chicago; as an adult, she became the Guardian and then Deputy Grand Guardian of that organization; she was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 70 years; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Merriman was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Merriman is survived by her sister, Eleanor Schloen Anderson; her 3 children, Steven Charles (Arlene) Merriman, Sue Carole (Dale) Strang, and William Glen (Bonnie) Merriman; her grandchildren, Deanna Grivetti, Melissa Blunk, Jennifer Burdick, Tim Merriman, Stephanie Merriman, Kevin Merriman, Christopher Merriman, and Amanda Merriman; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grivetti, Sarah Grivetti, Leah Grivetti, Hannah Grivetti, and Bailey Merriman; her nephews, Andrew Anderson and Laurence (Diane) Anderson; and her niece, Nancy (Robert) Hoffman; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Ruth E. Merriman, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ruth Merriman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
