SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Anton Joseph "Papa Tony" Cerveny of
4Alamogordo, New Mexico, who passed away on July 22, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was born in Chicago on May 13, 1918;
6he served in the United States Navy during World War II,
7serving in the Pacific; he later attained his graduate degree
8from Northwestern University; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was a bassoonist for the Chicago
10Symphonic Orchestra, the Longines Symphony Orchestra, the
11Chicago Civic Opera Orchestra, Kryl's Symphony Orchestra, the
12Illinois Symphony, WGN Radio, Sonja Henie's Hollywood
13Orchestra, and several other stage show orchestras; he also
14taught at Wesleyan University; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was the director of Virginia area
16bands for 6 years and Harvard High School bands for 28 years,
17building the instrumental music department, culminating in
18multiple State sweepstakes winners and runners-up; in 1973, the
19band participated in an international competition in Vienna,
20Austria, earning top honors; he was one of the early founders
21and ongoing promoters of Harvard Milk Days and was its Grand
22Marshal in 2004; he was inducted into the National Bandmasters

1Hall of Fame (Phi Beta Mu) in 1990; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was a member of the Loyal Order of
3Moose and the American Legion; in later years, he ran a small
4marketing specialties business called "Suz-A Pouch Company";
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was preceded in death by his wife of
757 years, Margaret; his son, Dan; and his brother, Louis; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was the proud father of 4 children,
9Dan, Tony (Pam), Maria Showalter, and Ron (Beth); the
10grandfather of 8; and the great-grandfather of many more;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Anton Joseph "Papa Tony" Cerveny, and extend our sincere
15condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
16him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Anton Cerveny as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
