SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Maxine V. Kempf of Crystal Lake, who
4passed away on February 10, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Maxine Kempf was born in Edmore, North Dakota to
6Carl and Bessie Benson on September 11, 1914; she attended
7Jamestown College in North Dakota on a music scholarship with a
8concentration in English literature and music; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Maxine Kempf began teaching in North Dakota high
10schools as an English and music instructor; following World War
11II, she and her husband, Adolph, moved to Chicago; in 1950, she
12and her husband and their two children moved to Des Plaines and
13then to Crystal Lake, where she lived for 66 years; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Maxine Kempf renewed her teaching career and began
15a 24-year career with the Crystal Lake Public Schools, where
16she taught language arts and developed special expertise in the
17teaching of literacy and reading; she earned a master's degree
18in Reading Education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb;
19for the last half of her career, she served outside the
20classroom as the Crystal Lake School District Curriculum
21Coordinator and Language Arts Specialist in teacher training,
22diagnostic evaluator of student reading problems, and as an

1assistant to her lifelong friend, Leon Lundahl, who served as
2school superintendent; she also served as piano accompanist to
3several young school musicians; in addition to her teaching and
4administrative work, she served for a number of years as an
5adjunct professor at the National College of Education in
6Evanston and at Northern Illinois University; and
 
7    WHEREAS, For 50 years, Maxine Kempf belonged to the Delta
8Kappa Gamma honorary education Society; she was a longtime
9member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the PEO
10Sisterhood; she was a 60-year member of the First United
11Methodist Church of Crystal Lake, and when younger, she was the
12church organist and music director; after retirement, she
13served for a number of years as a board member of the Crystal
14Lake YMCA and the American Heart Association; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Maxine Kempf is survived by her two children, Ann
16Dahm and James (Tomoko) Kempf; her four grandchildren, Matthew
17(Christine) Dahm, Mandy Dahm, Kathryn Kempf (Dan) Burke,
18Michael (Emma) Kempf; and her four great-grandchildren,
19Lleyton and Caroline Dahm and Jackson and Dillon Burke;
20therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
23Maxine V. Kempf, and extend our sincere condolences to her

1family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
2further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Maxine Kempf as an expression of our
5deepest sympathy.
