SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Werner Ellmann of Geneva, who passed away
4on January 24, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Werner Ellmann was born in Bodenwoehr, Germany to
6George and Anna Maria (nee Gross) Ellmann on February 16, 1924;
7he was a decorated veteran of World War II; he helped liberate
8prisoners at the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria and
9was a translator at the Nuremberg war trials; he married
10Elizabeth A. Hagen in Chicago on September 16, 1950; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Werner Ellmann was a successful publisher,
12editor, and salesman, finishing his career with McGraw-Hill;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Werner Ellmann fought for civil rights, including
15actively marching and protesting in the 1960s; he was a
16passionate advocate for volunteering, including with the
17McHenry Parole Division and the Peace and Justice Committee of
18Woodstock; he founded Habitat for Humanity in McHenry County,
19was Vice-Chairman of the McHenry County Human Relations
20Council, served on the Pioneer Center Foundation Board,
21co-founded an anti-bullying program called Principled Minds,
22and frequently spoke to school groups about the atrocities of

1the Holocaust; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Werner Ellmann was preceded in death by his
3parents and his 2 brothers, Herbert and Wilfried Ellmann; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Werner Ellmann is survived by his wife of 65
5years, Elizabeth; his 3 sons, Lance (Barbara) Ellmann, David
6Ellmann, and Matthew (Kathleen) Ellmann; his daughter, Anne
7Marie Schafer; his brother, Norbert "William" (Macrina)
8Ellmann; his 6 grandchildren, Megan (Jason) Nachowicz, Emily
9(Ryan Martinez) Ellmann, Elizabeth Ellmann, Kyle Ellmann, Evan
10Ellmann, and Nina Ellmann; and his great-grandson, Grayson Cole
11Martinez; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Werner Ellmann, and extend our sincere condolences to his
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Werner Ellmann as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
