SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1152

(As Amended by Senate Amendment Nos. 1 & 2)

WHEREAS, The pet industry and animal advocates oppose the irresponsible breeding of dogs; and

WHEREAS, Every year, dogs are euthanized due to a range of factors, including behavioral issues that make them unadoptable, geographic concentration, and public demand for certain breeds over others; and

WHEREAS, Responsible pet ownership begins with research and communication to find the ideal pet for each individual circumstance and pet owners need to be diligent in researching the background and breed requirements of any puppy they are purchasing or adopting to minimize the likelihood of relinquishment; and

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois should continue to ensure that dogs are bred in a safe and secure environment; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate June 1, 2016 as "Healthy Puppy Day" in the State of Illinois in order to raise awareness of irresponsible breeding of dogs and its impact on the animals and people of this State.
