SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of former Springfield Mayor Oswald "Ossie" Langfelder, who passed away on October 21, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Ossie Langfelder was born in Vienna, Austria on August 2, 1926 to Ruth Marie and Otto B. Langfelder; he fled Austria in 1938 and arrived in the United States in 1940; he served in the Field Artillery in the South Pacific during World War II and then in the occupation of Japan; he graduated from Springfield Junior College and studied engineering at Purdue University; and

WHEREAS, Ossie Langfelder was employed by the Department of Transportation for 4 years, Willet Consulting Engineers for 2 years, and Crawford, Murphy and Tilly for 22 years before entering politics; and

WHEREAS, Ossie Langfelder was elected as the Springfield Commissioner of Streets for 8 years and then as Mayor of Springfield for 8 years; he then returned for the next 12 years to the Department of Transportation, retiring in 2008 at the age of 82; and

WHEREAS, Ossie Langfelder published his first book, "My Incredible Journey", at the age of 84; and

WHEREAS, Ossie Langfelder is survived by his wife, Mary "Midge" Dunham, and their 13 children, Joan (Steve) Baker, Jamie (James) Cour, John (Nancy), Joseph (Gale), Judith (Dennis) Shackelford, James (Billie), Jacqueline (Allan) Yoho, Jay Paul (Amy), Janice (Larry) Davis, Jean (Larry) Rockford, Joshua (Angie), Jacob (John), and Julia (Dustin) Frevert; his sister, Edith; his 31 grandchildren; and his 5 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of former Springfield Mayor Oswald "Ossie" Langfelder, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ossie Langfelder as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
