SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Richard Anthony "Dick" Stanfel, Sr., who
4passed away on June 22, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was born on July 20, 1927 in
6San Francisco, California; his parents were Peter and Anne
7Stanfel; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. played college football at
9the University of San Francisco and was drafted in the second
10round of the 1951 NFL Draft; he later played for the Detroit
11Lions from 1952 to 1955 and the Washington Redskins from 1956
12to 1958; while playing for the Lions, he won 2 NFL
13Championships in 1952 and 1953 and earned two Pro Bowl
14selections in 1953 and 1955; after the 1953 championship
15season, he was voted by his teammates to be MVP, the only
16offensive lineman to ever receive this distinction; in 1956, he
17was traded to the Redskins, where he earned 3 straight Pro Bowl
18honors from 1956 to 1958; he was named to the National Football
19League 1950s All-Decade Team and was named one of the 70
20Greatest Redskins in 2002; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Following his career as a player in the NFL,
22Richard Stanfel, Sr. began his coaching career at Notre Dame

1University and the University of San Francisco before spending
2the remainder of his 35-year coaching career in the pro ranks
3with the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers, the New
4Orleans Saints, and the Chicago Bears; he became the interim
5head coach for the New Orleans Saints for the final 4 games of
6the 1980 season; from 1981 to 1992, he served as the offensive
7line coach for the Chicago Bears and helped produce a solid
8offensive line that was an integral part of the Bears winning
9Super Bowl XX following the 1985 season; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was named a senior nominee
11for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and again in 2012 and
12was respected and loved by his fellow coaches and players
13alike; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. is survived by his sons,
15Richard (Mary Roxanne) Stanfel, Jr., Scott (Deadra) Stanfel,
16and Jon (Sandra) Stanfel; his grandchildren, Jordyn, Taylor,
17Nick, Sam, Peter, Margaret, Brandon, and Jessica; and his
18sister, Lois Jensen; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
21family and friends, mourn the passing of Richard Anthony "Dick"
22Stanfel, Sr.; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Richard Stanfel, Sr. as an
3expression of our sympathy.
