SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Richard Anthony "Dick" Stanfel, Sr., who passed away on June 22, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was born on July 20, 1927 in San Francisco, California; his parents were Peter and Anne Stanfel; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. played college football at the University of San Francisco and was drafted in the second round of the 1951 NFL Draft; he later played for the Detroit Lions from 1952 to 1955 and the Washington Redskins from 1956 to 1958; while playing for the Lions, he won 2 NFL Championships in 1952 and 1953 and earned two Pro Bowl selections in 1953 and 1955; after the 1953 championship season, he was voted by his teammates to be MVP, the only offensive lineman to ever receive this distinction; in 1956, he was traded to the Redskins, where he earned 3 straight Pro Bowl honors from 1956 to 1958; he was named to the National Football League 1950s All-Decade Team and was named one of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Following his career as a player in the NFL, Richard Stanfel, Sr. began his coaching career at Notre Dame University and the University of San Francisco before spending the remainder of his 35-year coaching career in the pro ranks with the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers, the New Orleans Saints, and the Chicago Bears; he became the interim head coach for the New Orleans Saints for the final 4 games of the 1980 season; from 1981 to 1992, he served as the offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears and helped produce a solid offensive line that was an integral part of the Bears winning Super Bowl XX following the 1985 season; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was named a senior nominee for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and again in 2012 and was respected and loved by his fellow coaches and players alike; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. is survived by his sons, Richard (Mary Roxanne) Stanfel, Jr., Scott (Deadra) Stanfel, and Jon (Sandra) Stanfel; his grandchildren, Jordyn, Taylor, Nick, Sam, Peter, Margaret, Brandon, and Jessica; and his sister, Lois Jensen; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Richard Anthony "Dick" Stanfel, Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard Stanfel, Sr. as an expression of our sympathy.
