HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Doris Turner on the occasion of being selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore of the City of Springfield by Mayor Jim Langfelder; and

WHEREAS, Doris Turner was first elected to represent Springfield's 3rd Ward on the Springfield City Council in 2011 after serving as a member of the Sangamon County Board for 10 years; she worked for the State of Illinois for 33 years, 22 of which were spent with the Department of Public Health; and

WHEREAS, While at the Department of Public Health, Doris Turner developed, administered, and implemented nationally recognized programs to increase awareness of HIV, breast and cervical cancer, and prostate cancer within communities of color; and

WHEREAS, Doris Turner has served her community as a member of the Lincoln Land Community College Eastside Advisory Board, the Springfield/Sangamon County Health Initiative Board of Directors, the Springfield/Sangamon County Minority Health Coalition, the Springfield Chamber of Commerce Q5 Initiative Diversity Council, the Voices for Illinois Children Springfield Leadership Team, and as chair of the Sangamon County Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, Doris Turner was honored at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum's 2014 Honoring our Heritage Gala for her many years of community service; and

WHEREAS, Doris Turner is a lifelong Springfield resident who has worked to lead her home community through difficult times, addressing challenges ranging from public safety to foreclosure; and

WHEREAS, Doris Turner is a devoted and hard-working public servant who maintains a focus on making government services accessible; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Doris Turner on the occasion of her selection as Mayor Pro Tempore of the City of Springfield and wish her well in this position; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Doris Turner as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
