HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 40th anniversary of the
4Paul G. Stewart Center of the Peoples Consumer Co-Operative;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Peoples Consumer Co-Operative (PCC) was
7organized in 1937 as a cooperative buying club by a group of
8young, professional African-Americans; in 1937, it was very
9difficult for African-Americans to purchase quality goods and
10services; the PCC provided the vehicle for African-Americans to
11purchase quality goods in bulk in order to offer them to its
12members at discounted prices; the PCC later formed a credit
13union that assisted its member in purchasing single-family
14homes and multi-family buildings that were converted to housing
15cooperatives and condominiums; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The PCC got involved in government-assisted
17housing in the early 1970s; it sponsored and developed 893
18affordable housing units for senior and family households; the
19developments are named after Paul G. Stewart, the second
20African-American certified public accountant in the State of
21Illinois; and
 
22    WHEREAS, The Paul G. Stewart Center has nearly 1,200

1residents; it is a community with opportunities for belonging,
2sharing, and interdependence; it is an environment that is rich
3in social and cultural activities; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Since 1975, each new building and each new
5individual resident has been welcomed with the same warmth and
6quickly becomes integrated into the community; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9recognize the 40th anniversary of the Paul G. Stewart Center of
10the Peoples Consumer Co-Operative and wish them many more
11successful years; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the residents of the Paul G. Stewart Center as an
14expression of our esteem and respect.
