HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Evanston History Center has announced the launch of the "Year of Dawes", a yearlong series of programs, publications, and events held in honor of the 150th birthday of Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951); and

WHEREAS, Charles Dawes was an accomplished politician, serving as Vice-President under Calvin Coolidge, a Nobel laureate, a philanthropist, a family man, and one of Evanston's most famous citizens; and

WHEREAS, The year of special programming is designed to re-examine Charles Dawes' career and biography and to explore the larger context of an early-20th century world - Dawes's "heyday" - that has all but vanished; and

WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" will include a variety of programing, a special exhibit focused on Charles Dawes' life and career, and 2 publications: a new edition of Dawes' 1921 'A Journal of the Great War' and a biography of Dawes by award-winning author, Annette Dunlap, to be published by Northwestern University Press; and

WHEREAS, A series of lectures will also be offered, which will include biographical talks about the Dawes' family in Evanston, an exploration of the landscape of the Dawes House, and talks on themes related to Charles Dawes' career and life, including finance, genealogy, adoption, and others; and

WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" officially kicks off on Charles Dawes' 150th birthday, August 27, 2015 at the Dawes House with a starlight party featuring live music, appetizers, cocktails, and a momentous announcement about the future of the Dawes House; and

WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" runs from August of 2015 through August of 2016; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize and congratulate the Evanston History Center on the launch of its exciting programmatic year in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Gates Dawes; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership of the Evanston History Center as an expression of our esteem and respect.
