HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) was founded in 1891; the organization represents about 750,000 workers in the electrical industry in the United States, Canada, Panama, and several Caribbean nations; and

WHEREAS, IBEW International President Edwin D. "Ed" Hill was born on August 11, 1937 in Beaver, Pennsylvania; in 1956, he joined IBEW Local 712 in Beaver as a journeyman wireman and quickly became an active member of the local; and

WHEREAS, In 1961, Edwin Hill was elected to the political action committee of IBEW Local 712 and took on greater leadership roles; in 1964, he was appointed to the position of Vice President and eventually became President of IBEW Local 712; and

WHEREAS, In 1976, Edwin Hill was appointed Vice President of the Pennsylvania American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); during this time, he married his wife, Rosemary, and the pair became the proud parents of 3 children; and

WHEREAS, In 1992, Edwin Hill was appointed Representative of the IBEW Third District, representing Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware; he was appointed Vice President of the IBEW Third District in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Due to his diligence, tenacity, and advocacy for working men and women, Edwin Hill continued to receive greater responsibilities within the IBEW; in 1997, he was appointed International Secretary by President John "Jack" Barry; in 1998, he was named IBEW's Secretary-Treasurer; and

WHEREAS, On January 29, 2001, following John "Jack" Barry's retirement, Edwin Hill was appointed to serve as President of IBEW International; the following September, he was elected by a landslide vote and took office for his first 5-year term; he served as IBEW International President for more than 14 years and recently announced his plan to retire on June 1, 2015, after nearly 60 years with IBEW; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Edwin D. Hill on his retirement and thank him for his nearly 60 years of dedicated service as a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Edwin Hill as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
