HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Poplar Creek Public Library District; and

WHEREAS, The Poplar Creek Public Library was founded in 1966 in two garages, one being fiction, the other being nonfiction; and

WHEREAS, The Poplar Creek Library was originally located in a storefront; between the years of 1969 and 1975, it increased to four storefronts, and the number of hours it was open increased to 66 hours per week; and

WHEREAS, After the Poplar Creek Library converted to a district, it began offering services to Hanover Park; one year later, construction began for a new building located on Park Avenue; in 1980, the library became a government depository for federal and State documents; and

WHEREAS, In 1991, a modular unit became the branch in Hanover Park; in 2006, it was named the Sonya Crawshaw Branch in honor of the late President of Hanover Park; and

WHEREAS, A referendum was passed in 2007 to enlarge the main library to its current size; the new library was opened in 2009; its modern design has won architecture awards and been used in the popular television series, "Empire", as a location setting; and

WHEREAS, The 50th anniversary celebration of the Poplar Creek Public Library District will be held on September 24, 2016 at the Poplar Creek Public Library; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we wish to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Poplar Creek Public Library District and wish it many more successful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Candace McCreary, President of the Poplar Creek Public Library District.
