SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of John Thomas "Jack" Petry, who passed away
4on August 19, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Petry was born on June 8, 1925; his parents
6were Charles A. Petry and Josephine Tyrrell Petry; he married
7his loving wife, JoAnne, in 1951; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John Petry was an Eagle Scout and was known for
9his paper route; he attended Holy Cross School and Champaign
10High School, where he participated in football, wrestling, and
11golf; he finished in 3rd place in the State wrestling
12tournament, which earned him a spot in the Champaign High
13School Sports Hall of Fame; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Petry volunteered for the Naval Air Corps out
15of high school and trained as a fighter pilot, completing his
16training just as World War II was ending; and
 
17    WHEREAS, John Petry graduated from the University of
18Illinois with a degree in architectural engineering; he
19continued wrestling in the Navy and in college, obtaining a top
20finish in the NCAA tournament; and

1    WHEREAS, John Petry joined C.A. Petry and Sons and worked
2as a general contractor until his retirement in 1990; during
3this time, he joined the Central Illinois Chapter of the
4Associated General Contractors and served as the
5organization's president in 1969; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Petry was one of the original parishioners of
7St. Matthew Catholic Parish and built both the church and the
8original part of the grade school; his firm also constructed
9numerous buildings, such as Centennial High School and the main
10parts of Parkland College; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Petry was a member of the Champaign Country
12Club, where he once served as president; he and his wife were
13loyal volunteers at Catholic Worker House (Daily Bread) for
14many years; he also served on the Board of Eastern Illinois
15Foodbank; and
 
16    WHEREAS, John Petry enjoyed telling stories, sports,
17especially Illini basketball or football, attending his
18children's sporting events, and taking winter ski trips and
19summer camping trips with his wife and children; and
 
20    WHEREAS, John Petry was preceded in death by his wife,
21JoAnne, and a son, David; and

1    WHEREAS, John Petry is survived by 2 daughters, Teresa
2(Patrick) Dorsey and Mary Petry; 5 sons, Tom (Margaret) Petry,
3Robert (Elizabeth) Petry, Tim Petry, Peter (Rosy) Petry, and
4Joe (Ann) Petry; 2 sisters, Mary (Ted) Purvin and Patricia
5(James) Kramer; a sister-in-law, Patty (Paul) Petry; and a
6brother, Richard (Lynn) Petry; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
9family and friends, mourn the passing of John Thomas "Jack"
10Petry; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of John Petry as an expression of our
13sympathy.
